The Best Ways to Fail at Internet Marketing

by Steven Weber

I hate to start with a negative title like that. However, I believe in cutting right to the chase without any sugar coating!

My consulting business puts me in contact with many beginners to Internet marketing. Most of these online marketing beginners don’t have a clue as to what is involved with really making money online. Most of them seem to follow the same wrong roads and make the same mistakes over and over.

Here are some of the top reasons they fail before even getting out of the starting gate:

Beginners think they don’t need to know about building even a simple website or landing page. Nothing could be further from the truth! A beginner should make this one of their top priorities!

For some reason, many beginners say they “don’t want to sell anything”. Actually, all the money made online is made by selling a product or service. One way or the other, if money is to be made, there is going to be some type of selling going on.
Newbies think Google AdWords is going to be their gold mine. They all soon learn it is nothing but a money pit when used by the inexperienced. PayPerClick requires much study and practice.

Some beginners do learn web design. Guess what most of them do before anything else? They slap tons of affiliate ads and AdSense all over the pages. They have more ads then content! Not only does the site get no traffic at first…making the ads worthless…but search engines will ee right through them and never think about ranking that site well for anything.

Many beginners sign up with one of those all-in-one site/shopping cart solutions which provides the shopping cart AND all the products. Some pay as much as $29 per month for these worthless sites. These are no way to make money!

Another big problem beginners have is that they limit themselves to just one area. They may focus totally on trying to learn AdWords. We all have different abilities. What if they were really good at SEO but never knew it since they didn’t give it a try. Beginners need to dabble in several different areas to get a “feel” for what they might be best at.
On the other hand, some beginners approach Internet marketing with a giant shot-gun approach. They try TOO many things at once. They may try to create and market 4 or 5 sites at once. Dividing their time to that degree on so many projects will prove very useless for making money.

Too often beginners have one Internet marketing failure and then just quit! Heck, I wish I had just a few bucks for all the failures I’ve had! Online marketing is about failing fast and learning from each failure. It only takes one success now and then to make it all very worthwhile!

Beginners often think they need to buy a “package” of some type. They think there is some amount of money they can pay which will setup a money making system for them. There is no way to “buy” success; it has to be obtained the old fashioned way – Learn the process and then act!

Lastly, some beginners are totally against spending ANY money in their online venture. It does require some money…not much though. I started my most successful site with an $8.95 domain name, $3.95/month hosting and a case of products to get started with for just $200. That was the best investment I ever made! Many beginners want everything to be free. They don’t even want to pay for $3.95 per month hosting. Instead, they will opt for free hosting which has the host’s ads on their site!

There you have it! Ten of the top mistakes beginning Internet marketers make!
